William Moss became head archeologist with Ville de Québec’s land use planning department in 1985—the first to hold such a position in Canada—and coordinates municipal actions relating to archeology in this UNESCO World Heritage City. Over 200 archeological studies have taken place under his direction with such heavyweight partners as Université Laval. He has assembled a hefty research file over the years, authoring numerous journal articles and delivering dozens of presentations at national and international conferences. He has organized big-league conferences in Québec City and abroad, among them those of the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) in 2000 and 2014. He was Ambassador of the Year in 2001.

World-renowned archeologist William Moss’s scientific and outreach work, and his profound convictions regarding what archeology can and should do, have shown Ville de Québec that not only is archeology a key part of providing state-of-the-art protection and visibility for the city’s history and heritage, it can also be a powerful driver of economic development.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Université Laval in 2014.
